Why Kueh Lapis

Kueh Lapis has always been a hallmark of festivals in Singapore. It is also a traditional gift for visitors who appreciate a unique taste of the peranakan culture. The many layers in the cake signify the layers of life and longevity. It requires immense skill to create each layers of the Lapis and to ensures that the cake remains flat and not sink in the middle. Each cake takes four to five hours to make, with each of its layers tediously added on one by one each time the layers caramelized. It took 20 years to understand the know-how such as the right mix of spices, the temperature, the texture of the dough and most of all the timings for each layer. The recipe has remained roughly the same for the past 20 years, with small tweaks to accommodate the customers feedback.

Only the best and most luxurious ingredients are used. The butter, for instance, has to be a particular brand. The eggs has to be the right size, and the spices are really special.

The cake is presented in a red box designed with a batik print. It is ideal all celebratory occasion, like the celebration of a baby’s first month, birthdays, promotion or simply a get together among friends.
